All teeth have a nerve supply that allows them to feel heat, cold, and pressure.

These nerves are also responsible for the pain we feel if a tooth is decayed or infected.  Tooth decay, trauma, and gum disease can lead to irreversible damage to this nerve and result in toothache and infection, sometimes called an abscess. This toothache can make it difficult to eat, and drink and it can even disturb sleep.

In these situations, you may be recommended a root canal treatment as a solution to save your tooth. Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, involves using very delicate instruments to disinfect and fill the root canal system within the tooth. A final restoration, often a crown, is usually needed to provide a good seal and protect the tooth from fracture.

FAQs

Will I be able to save my tooth?

Root canal treatment generally has a very high success rate when done to a high standard. Usually, the only other alternative to root canal treatment is the removal of the tooth after which you would be left with a space.

There are certain circumstances under which root canal treatment is not recommended such as if there is not enough tooth structure left to restore following the root canal treatment, if there is not enough bone support for the tooth, or if the root canal system is overly complicated or inaccessible. Referral to a specialist may be recommended, or we may recommend that the tooth is extracted.

What if it doesn’t work?

If the root canal treatment is not successful the first time around then we may be able to offer re-treatment. Provided that the reason for failure can be remedied.

How long does it take to complete?

Root canal treatment can take one, two, or even sometimes three appointments to complete depending on the complexity of the root canal system. After root canal treatment is completed, you will usually need a further two appointments to complete the final restoration on the tooth to protect it.

Does it hurt?

We always aim to establish complete anaesthesia before commencing a root canal treatment so the procedure is as comfortable as possible.
