To encourage the best possible healing:
Bite firmly on the gauze provided for 30–45 minutes
Avoid rinsing, spitting or using a straw for the first 24 hours
Eat soft, cool foods for the first couple of days
Avoid smoking, alcohol and strenuous exercise while healing
Begin gentle warm salt-water rinses after the first 24 hours

Does a tooth extraction hurt?
No. The area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic before treatment begins, meaning you shouldn’t feel pain during the procedure—only some pressure. Mild discomfort afterwards is completely normal and can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
How long does a tooth extraction take?
A simple extraction usually takes just a few minutes. Surgical extractions, including impacted wisdom teeth, may take a little longer depending on the complexity of the tooth
How long does recovery take?
Most patients recover within two to three days following a simple extraction. Surgical extractions can take a little longer, although most people return to normal activities within a few days.
What can I eat after my extraction?
Stick to soft, cool foods such as yoghurt, mashed potato, scrambled eggs, soup and smoothies (without using a straw). Avoid hot, crunchy or hard foods until the area has begun to heal.
What happens if I don't remove the tooth?
Leaving a severely damaged or infected tooth untreated can lead to worsening pain, infection, damage to neighbouring teeth and more complex dental problems. Your dentist will explain whether extraction is the best option for your long-term oral health.
Will I need to replace the tooth?
Not always. However, for visible or heavily used teeth, we’ll usually discuss replacement options such as dental implants, bridges or dentures to restore your smile and maintain healthy biting function.
